Trolling

The comments argued until sunrise. The person who started it had gone to bed.

01Dictionary Meaning

Trolling is deliberately posting or behaving online in ways intended to provoke, upset, or disrupt other people.

02What People Think

If I produce the perfect rebuttal, this person will finally engage honestly.

03What’s Underneath

Trolling deliberately seeks an upsetting or disruptive reaction. It can take the form of inflammatory remarks, distracting claims, or bad-faith participation in a discussion. The intended result may be amusement, attention, conflict, or derailment rather than a sincere exchange about the topic being discussed.

A commenter drops a provocative line into a calm conversation and disappears. Others spend hours proving points, defending themselves, and explaining misunderstandings. In this scenario, the responses supply the disruption the initial message was meant to trigger, even though the original commenter does not contribute anything further.

Disagreement, sarcasm, and mistakes are not automatically trolling. Motives are often uncertain, and the label can be used to dismiss genuine criticism. Rage bait overlaps with trolling when provocation is used to attract a larger audience; trolling can also be aimed simply at disturbing a particular person or community.

04The Game

Does the exchange show a willingness to clarify or reconsider, or does every answer become a new opportunity for disruption? What would count as a useful outcome before you invest another hour?

05One Line

An argument can continue long after the person seeking it has left.
