03What’s Underneath

Attention is limited even when information is abundant. A person can open hundreds of tabs, but cannot meaningfully attend to every one at once. That makes time spent watching, reading, or responding valuable to businesses seeking an audience for advertising, subscriptions, products, or influence.

Picture a lunch break with ten minutes left. A video promises a surprising ending, a notification announces a reply, and another app offers a fresh update. Each invitation is small. Together, they compete with the conversation, rest, or task the person originally chose for those minutes.

An attention-based business can provide useful information and genuine enjoyment. The tension appears when keeping someone engaged becomes more important than helping them finish what they came to do. Creator earnings are one part of this wider system; the attention economy describes the resource being competed for.
