Family connections can affect who gets a meeting, who knows the unwritten rules and who can afford to keep trying. None of those advantages establishes whether the person is talented.
Talent also does not erase the advantage. The opening stage may be easier while later performance still requires real work.
Treating the debate as a choice between total merit and total incompetence hides the more useful mechanism: how access is allocated before outsiders ever see the competition.
