Glass Ceiling
Her reviews keep improving. The promotion keeps going to someone who supposedly feels more like leadership.
01Dictionary Meaning
A glass ceiling is an unofficial or unacknowledged barrier that prevents qualified members of some groups from reaching higher positions.
02What People Think
If the rules say everyone can apply, everyone has the same chance. Anyone who works hard enough can reach the next level.
03What’s Underneath
A glass ceiling is a structural barrier that does not announce itself as a closed door. It can appear through assumptions about who looks authoritative, unequal access to influential supporters, or expectations that fit some lives better than others. The opportunity is formally visible while the route to it is uneven.
The term is especially associated with women and members of marginalized groups being blocked from senior positions. It does not mean that every rejected promotion is discrimination. One disappointing decision needs context; recurring differences in opportunity, evaluation, and advancement can reveal a pattern that an individual explanation misses.
Imagine being told to gain leadership experience while the assignments that provide it repeatedly go elsewhere. Next year, the same missing experience becomes the reason for another rejection. The barrier can reproduce itself without anyone writing a rule that says you cannot advance. More effort alone may leave the decision-making arrangement untouched.
04The Game
What are the stated requirements, who gets chances to meet them, and are the same standards applied consistently? A useful examination looks at the path to qualification as well as the final promotion decision.
05One Line
A ceiling can be invisible and still decide how far someone rises.
