Office Politics

You wrote the report. Your colleague delivered the last sentence when the boss walked in. Guess who got remembered.

01Dictionary Meaning

Office politics consists of informal relationships and tactics used to gain influence, advantage, or resources at work.

02What People Think

Office politics is just gossip and flattery. If I keep my head down and do excellent work, I can stay outside it completely.

03What’s Underneath

A workplace has an official structure and an informal one. The chart says who manages whom; everyday relationships influence whose ideas get heard, who receives early information, and whose mistakes are forgiven. Office politics operates through that second structure, including in a team that never shares an office.

It is not automatically dishonest. Building support for a sensible change or making an overlooked contribution visible also involves influence. The damaging version appears when credit, access, or loyalty matters more than honest evidence, or when people protect their position by excluding someone else.

Picture two equally useful suggestions. One arrives cold in a meeting; the other has already been discussed with the people who can approve it. The difference in reception may have less to do with quality than preparation and relationships. Recognizing that does not require becoming manipulative, but pretending decisions happen without people leaves part of the process invisible.

04The Game

Who shapes this decision before the formal meeting starts? Can you make your contribution and the relevant facts visible without buying influence through gossip, false agreement, or someone else’s exclusion?

05One Line

The organization chart shows authority; relationships help determine whose voice reaches it.
