Shadowban
The post got no attention. The explanation got a conspiracy board.
01Dictionary Meaning
A shadowban is a restriction on the visibility of a user’s account or content that is not made clear to the affected user.
02What People Think
If my views fall, the platform must have secretly hidden my account.
03What’s Underneath
A shadowban restricts visibility without giving the affected user a clear account of the restriction. The user may still be able to post or see their own material while other people have less access to it. The term is also used loosely for suspected limits whose existence has not been established.
Imagine someone publishing a forty-minute video about a kettle and receiving few views. A hidden restriction is one possible explanation they might consider. Audience interest, distribution changes, posting patterns, or ordinary variation can also affect reach. The number alone does not reveal which explanation is correct.
Different platforms describe and implement visibility controls differently. A clear account needs evidence of the particular restriction, not simply the feeling of being overlooked. The word is useful for discussing hidden moderation, but can become misleading when every disappointing result is treated as proof of deliberate suppression.
04The Game
What observable evidence distinguishes a restriction from weak distribution or low interest? Is there a platform notice, visibility test, or documented rule that actually supports the conclusion being drawn?
05One Line
Low reach is an observation. A hidden ban is an explanation to test.
