Second Shift

Two people finish work at six. Only one of them is finished working.

01Dictionary Meaning

The second shift is the unpaid household and caregiving work people perform in addition to their paid employment.

02What People Think

“Once the paid workday ends, both partners are off duty until tomorrow.”

03What’s Underneath

Picture two partners closing their laptops at the same time. One settles onto the sofa while the other starts dinner, sorts laundry and prepares the household for the following morning. The paid day has ended for both. The unpaid workload has not.

The second shift describes household and caregiving work performed alongside paid employment. Arlie Hochschild and Anne Machung used the term to examine working families and unequal domestic workloads. It draws attention to the combination of jobs rather than treating employment and home responsibilities as unrelated parts of a day.

This additional work may happen in the evening, before work or between paid tasks. A person can be both a breadwinner and a substantial caregiver. The concept concerns time and responsibility, while mental load emphasizes the thinking that organizes household activity. Neither an income figure nor the number of paid hours alone gives a complete account of who is working.

04The Game

When one shift ends, which obligations remain, who performs them, and whose recovery time depends on somebody else continuing to work? The household timetable reveals what the job title misses.

05One Line

Clocking out of paid work does not clock a household out of needing care.
