Prenup

A wedding joins two people. Their financial assumptions may still be separate.

01Dictionary Meaning

A prenup, or prenuptial agreement, is an agreement made before marriage addressing financial matters such as property and obligations, with legal effect determined by applicable law.

02What People Think

"It is just a plan for getting divorced."

03What’s Underneath

The discussion can reveal what each person owns, owes, expects to share and expects to keep separate. It can also expose assumptions about business interests, family support and time spent outside paid work.

A signed document does not make every provision enforceable everywhere. Disclosure, consent, procedure and the substance of the agreement may matter differently across jurisdictions.

The underlying task is to make expectations explicit while both people can consider them carefully. The legal document must then work within the law governing their situation.

04The Game

Whose financial position changes through the marriage, which expectations need agreement, and which decisions remain subject to legal limits?

05One Line

A financial agreement can make assumptions speak before a conflict does.
