Permissionless

The network may let you in while the app keeps you out.

01Dictionary Meaning

Permissionless describes a system in which participation in a specified activity does not require advance approval from a central operator, provided its rules are met.

02What People Think

"Anyone can do anything without asking."

03What’s Underneath

A public blockchain may allow anyone to submit a valid transaction. A service built on it can still restrict its interface, require identification or offer access only in certain places.

Fees, technical resources and asset rules can create other limits. The absence of one gatekeeper does not remove every practical or legal condition.

Permissionless access can broaden who builds or participates. To know what that freedom covers, identify the precise layer and activity being described.

04The Game

Which action can happen without approval, whose service is still needed to perform it, and what rules remain outside the protocol?

05One Line

Permissionless always needs the next question: permission for what?
