New Money

Making a fortune and learning to live with one are different jobs.

01Dictionary Meaning

New money describes wealth acquired relatively recently by a person or family, rather than inherited through several generations.

02What People Think

"The hard part is over once the money arrives."

03What’s Underneath

A business sale or other large gain can replace one concentrated asset with many new decisions. Where is the money held? Who advises? Which commitments are affordable over time?

Family expectations may change before a durable arrangement exists. A person skilled at building a company is not automatically experienced in selecting investment managers or setting rules for shared support.

The familiar contrast with old money often turns into a judgment about taste. The more substantive question is how newly acquired resources become manageable and lasting.

04The Game

What capabilities helped create the wealth, and which different capabilities are now needed to manage the choices it creates?

05One Line

Making the money does not settle how to live with it.
