Money Printing

Most new money does not come out of a printer.

01Dictionary Meaning

Money printing is an informal label for creating money, often used loosely for central bank actions and sometimes confused with government spending or bank lending.

02What People Think

"The government adds money, and prices rise by the same amount."

03What’s Underneath

Different mechanisms get compressed into the phrase. Commercial banks can create deposits when they make loans. Central banks can create reserves when purchasing assets. Government spending and the way it is financed are another part of the picture.

An asset purchase changes balance sheets; it does not simply place an equal cash gift in everyone's account. Lending also depends on demand, risk and banking constraints.

Effects on prices depend on what happens to spending, production, expectations and financial conditions. Naming the mechanism matters before predicting the result.

04The Game

Who creates which kind of money, who receives the corresponding asset or deposit, and through what route could spending change?

05One Line

Money creation has a mechanism and a first recipient, not just a big number.
