Gold

A gold bar owes you no interest. It also owes you no repayment.

01Dictionary Meaning

Gold is a precious metal used in goods and industry and held as an investment or reserve asset, valued through markets rather than an issuer's promise to repay.

02What People Think

"Gold is safe, so its price cannot hurt me."

03What’s Underneath

Physical gold does not depend on a company or government making contractual payments. Its market price can still fall, and buying, storing and selling it can carry costs.

The form of exposure matters. A bar, a fund share and a leveraged trading position are different arrangements, with different access and intermediary risks.

Holding gold also means giving up whatever the same money could have earned elsewhere. The attraction of a metal without an issuer does not remove questions about price, custody or the purpose of owning it.

04The Game

Which risk is the gold intended to address, and which new risks come from the way the exposure is held?

05One Line

Gold has no repayment promise. That is different from a price guarantee.
