Digital Dollar
Your dollars can be digital without being a new kind of dollar.
01Dictionary Meaning
Digital dollar is an ambiguous expression that can refer to electronic US-dollar balances, dollar-linked digital tokens or proposals for a US central bank digital currency.
02What People Think
"If it is digital and says dollars, the backing is the same."
03What’s Underneath
A bank deposit, a privately issued dollar stablecoin and a proposed central bank digital dollar are different arrangements. Each points to a different claim or issuer.
The interface can hide that distinction. A familiar currency symbol does not establish redemption rights, access conditions or who bears a loss if something goes wrong.
Much dollar use is already electronic. To understand a "digital dollar" announcement, first identify whether it concerns an existing balance, a new private product or a public-policy proposal.
04The Game
What instrument is being described, who is responsible for it, and what can the holder exchange it for?
05One Line
The currency symbol does not tell you who stands behind the balance.
