De-dollarization

One deal settled without dollars does not settle the dollar's future.

01Dictionary Meaning

De-dollarization is a reduction in reliance on the US dollar in a specified area, such as reserves, trade pricing, borrowing or payments.

02What People Think

"Countries switching one payment means the dollar is being replaced everywhere."

03What’s Underneath

A government can diversify reserve holdings while its businesses still borrow in dollars. A trade payment can use another currency while the contract's price remains linked to a dollar benchmark.

These are different forms of reliance, and they need not change together. Alternatives require willing counterparties, usable markets and ways to manage exchange-rate risk.

A political intention, a pilot transaction and a durable shift in routine activity are different kinds of evidence. The question needs a measure and a time period before it supports a conclusion.

04The Game

Which use of the dollar has actually declined, compared with what, and has an alternative become workable at the required scale?

05One Line

One deal without dollars is not a new monetary order.
