Burnout

The out-of-office reply expires. The workload is waiting.

01Dictionary Meaning

Burnout is a work-related phenomenon associated with unmanaged chronic workplace stress, involving exhaustion, detachment or cynicism toward work, and reduced professional effectiveness.

02What People Think

"I just need a holiday."

03What’s Underneath

Rest can matter. But consider an employee returning to the same understaffed team, unclear priorities and expectation of permanent availability.

The person has paused. The conditions producing the strain have continued.

Pay, job security and caring responsibilities can make reducing work difficult even when the need is clear. Treating the problem only as an individual's failure to recharge leaves the design of the work unexamined. Ordinary tiredness and burnout are not interchangeable, and one entry cannot diagnose a person's experience.

04The Game

Who controls the workload and recovery time, and what financial constraints limit the person's ability to change them?

05One Line

Time off can end while the conditions that exhausted you stay employed.
