Whale is market slang for a holder or participant with a position large enough to matter to a particular asset or market.

03What’s Underneath
A large transfer may be a sale preparation, a custody change or an internal movement. One address can also hold assets for many customers rather than one wealthy individual.
Size matters in relation to market depth. A trade that a deep market absorbs easily may move the price sharply in a thin one.
Watching large balances can reveal concentration and possible pressure. It cannot reliably turn an observed transfer into knowledge of the holder's intention or the next price move.
