Underconsumption
Keeping the old bag has somehow become a new trend.
01Dictionary Meaning
In consumer culture, underconsumption describes buying less and using possessions longer. In economics, the same word can refer to insufficient consumption across an economy.
02What People Think
"Buying less requires a whole new lifestyle."
03What’s Underneath
A partly used bottle and a repaired jacket are ordinary objects. Presented online, they can become evidence of a deliberate identity.
That visibility can normalize using what already works. It can also invite another shopping list: special containers, an approved wardrobe and the right objects for appearing restrained.
The underlying decision remains simpler than the aesthetic. Has something useful worn out, has a real need changed, or has a new way of displaying restraint created another reason to buy?
04The Game
Does the idea reduce purchases, or merely change which purchases signal that you belong?
05One Line
Buying less does not require a starter kit.
