Skimpflation
The room costs the same. The service you remember is now your job.
01Dictionary Meaning
Skimpflation is a reduction in product or service quality without a corresponding reduction in price.
02What People Think
"Nothing got more expensive. I just seem to get less help."
03What’s Underneath
Imagine renewing the same household service at the same price, only to find that human support has disappeared and you must now troubleshoot problems yourself. Or consider a familiar garment sold at its old price with noticeably weaker fabric. Skimpflation describes a reduction in the quality or service received without a matching price reduction.
This is harder to compare than a smaller packet. You can count grams; you cannot always put a clean number on slower support, less durable materials or a missing convenience. Part of the cost may move into your time, replacement purchases or effort. The nominal price can remain stable while the experience deteriorates.
The label needs a fair baseline. A changed recipe is not necessarily worse, and some people prefer self-service. A clearly cheaper, simpler option can be a reasonable trade. The issue is a meaningful reduction in what was previously delivered for the price, not the assumption that every change hides a trick.
04The Game
When comparing this year with last year, what exactly is included, how well does it work, and who now does the work? Check the service or product you actually receive, rather than relying only on the amount charged or the familiar name.
05One Line
A steady price can buy a thinner experience.
