Procrastination

The report is due tomorrow. Your desk, keyboard, folders, and collection of productivity tips have never looked better.

01Dictionary Meaning

Procrastination is postponing an intended task, especially when delay is unnecessary or likely to create problems.

02What People Think

I need the right mood, one more piece of information, or a little more pressure. Once those arrive, starting will suddenly become easy.

03What’s Underneath

Procrastination is delay that moves an intended task away from the present, often despite an expected cost. Not every postponement qualifies. Waiting for necessary information, resting before demanding work, or choosing a genuinely higher priority can be sensible. The question is what the delay is doing for you.

Consider the blank page you avoid by answering easy messages. The replies may be real work, but they also offer quick closure while the difficult task remains untouched. For a moment, avoiding uncertainty or possible failure feels better. Later, the same assignment returns with less time available and more pressure attached.

This is why a longer to-do list can fail to solve the problem. You may already know what needs doing. What remains unclear is the first manageable action, the standard you are trying to meet, or the uncomfortable feeling that appears when you begin. Preparing to work can become a convincing substitute for actually entering the task.

04The Game

What are you postponing: a task, a decision, or the discomfort of an imperfect first attempt? Would one small action produce real progress, or are you selecting another pleasant activity that only resembles preparation?

05One Line

The relief from delaying a task often expires before the task does.
