Hold-up Problem

The extra demand arrives after the costume is sewn to one person’s exact measurements.

01Dictionary Meaning

The hold-up problem arises when relationship-specific investment leaves one party vulnerable to the other demanding better terms afterward, discouraging such investment.

02What People Think

“Once I invest in making an agreement work, both sides have the same reason to honor the original terms.”

03What’s Underneath

Two friends plan a costume contest entry. One spends two weekends making a complicated outfit fitted around the other’s measurements. Just before the event, the wearer demands a larger share of any prize and threatens to withdraw. A replacement cannot easily use the custom-made work in the time remaining.

The investment has particular value in this relationship and much less value elsewhere. That creates vulnerability to opportunistic renegotiation after the work is done. The hold-up problem includes a consequence before the investment as well: expecting such a demand can discourage someone from making useful relationship-specific investments in the first place.

High switching costs can contribute to vulnerability, but they do not by themselves establish hold-up. The defining pattern involves specific investment and the possibility of the other party extracting better terms afterward. A newly disclosed price change caused by a genuine change in costs may describe a different problem. The timing and source of the dependence matter.

04The Game

Which effort or resource becomes hard to reuse elsewhere, and who can change the terms once it is committed? That sequence explains why a promising joint project may never get started.

05One Line

An investment made for one relationship can become the other side’s bargaining advantage.
