Emergency Fund

A broken refrigerator can become a borrowing decision.

01Dictionary Meaning

An emergency fund is money reserved for unplanned expenses or a disruption to income, with access available when it is needed.

02What People Think

"It's money sitting there doing nothing."

03What’s Underneath

When an urgent repair arrives, accessible savings create options. Without them, the same repair may require expensive credit, a rushed asset sale or postponing something else essential.

The fund's work is partly invisible: it keeps a short disruption from dictating the next several months.

The amount that provides useful protection depends on income reliability, essential costs, dependents and other support. There is no single balance that protects every household from every shock.

04The Game

Which disruption would force an expensive decision, and how much readily usable money would change that decision?

05One Line

An emergency fund buys time when a problem wants an immediate answer.
