Debt
The purchase lasts a moment. The payments book your future.
01Dictionary Meaning
Debt is an obligation to repay borrowed money or another amount owed, according to agreed or legally imposed terms.
02What People Think
"Debt lets me afford it now."
03What’s Underneath
A loan moves spending power into today and claims part of tomorrow's cash flow. Interest and fees set a price for that move.
Borrowing can fund a useful asset, bridge a genuine emergency or pay for something that disappears long before the installments do. The label "debt" cannot tell you which.
The amount, repayment schedule, rate and consequences of missing a payment determine how much flexibility the borrower gives up. A manageable balance can become difficult when income changes.
04The Game
What is the borrowed money making possible, and which future payments must still be met if that possibility disappoints?
05One Line
Borrowing moves the purchase forward and the obligation into your calendar.
