A bear market is a sustained period of broadly falling prices in a market, commonly accompanied by weaker confidence and reduced appetite for risk.

03What’s Underneath
A lower price can improve an opportunity. It can also reflect a lasting deterioration in the asset's prospects. The discount from a previous high does not tell you which.
Falling prices can expose obligations built during better conditions. Borrowers may need to add collateral or sell. Funds may face withdrawals. Other holders may simply need money for life outside the market.
Selling is therefore not always a judgment about eventual recovery. Sometimes it is a response to a deadline.
